Physics: Optics: Polarization and double-slit experiment?
1. A) Suppose you are looking through a linear polarizer with its transmission axis vertical, on the surface of a pot of water, and at some angle reflection we find that the brightness of the surface vanishes. What's happening? B) Is the change in vision if we now replace the water with benzene, all else being equal? Explain. 2. Half maximum of the first order, with the bright central fringe in the double-slit experiment, corresponds to a point where optical path difference of the length of the two openings is equal to: A. 0 B. 1 / 4 wavelength C. 1 / 2 wavelength D. Full Wavelength E. None of these three. What is the angle of polarization for the reflection of light from the surface of a piece of glass (ng = 1.55) immersed in water (Nw = 1.33)?
2) This is 0. The light path must be the same to produce a maximum value (ie constructive interference.) The linear polarizer plane polarized light, for element gets transmitted through, but any non-reflected light. This is because the "wave like" behavior of light. I'm not sure what would happen if you change benzene.
